Synopsis and Character Breakdown:

“A Little Room at the Inn” is a lighthearted Christmas play for adults.

Bill Grenawalt has reached the top of the corporate ladder by being protective of his reputation as a solitary leader.  This regard is tested when Bill, who is nearing retirement, and his much younger protégé, Julie Shaffer get caught in an unexpected snowstorm two days before Christmas.  Desperate for shelter, Bill and Julie find refuge in the last room available at the Wake Robin Inn, a roadside motel that operates by its own set of standards.

CHARACTERS
*We are casting four actors, for five roles.

BILL GRENAWALT: Bill is approaching retirement. He is the CEO of a major company that has several division of home products. He is a hard worker, conscientious. Conservative, and distant. In many respects, his life has reached a standstill, but he is ready for one last effort to re-take dominion over the world.

JULIE SHAFFER: Julie is a younger executive. On the rise. A true business prodigy. Confident beyond her years, with still a touch of youthful vulnerability. Ambitious, independent, and attractive. Forward thinking. Pragmatic. Problem solver. Doesn’t defer to cultural norms, but isn’t quite as free as she’d like to be. Her father was Mr. Grenawalt's mentor.

THE DESK CLERK aka DEACON SIMON: He is young. This is his first job. Today he is the only employee at the Wake Robin Inn who could get to work during a driving snow storm. Self-gratifying, he is eager to get good customer reviews and earn a promotion. Aims to give people what they want – or at least what he perceives they want.

THE TRUCK MAN aka MR. TRUETT: Grizzled. Spends the life on the road with his wife. Self-righteous and unafraid to impose his self-righteousness on others. A vigilante for human decency. Prurient. Dogmatic. Committed to the overthrow of any worldly entitlement, except as it applies to him.

FAITH GRENAWALT, the WIFE OF BILL GRENAWALT: Played by the same actor as the truck driver…It will be clear to the audience (but not necessarily to the characters) that Bill’s wife is the same actor as the Truck Driver. Her name is Faith, and she is peeved. Looks for acknowledgement and companionship.
