Technical Director – Center for Puppetry Arts

The Technical Director works with the Producer, Director, Scenic Designer, and Puppet Designer in the realization of the scenic elements for each production as well as providing technical support to other Center Departments.

Reports to:
• Producer

Direct reports are:
• Associate Technical Director
• All Additional Scene Shop Labor

Essential Responsibilities include:
• Generate and distribute technical specifications for production spaces and facilities to all designers, traveling companies, etc.
• Attend all meetings, tech notes sessions, run-throughs, and technical, dress and preview performances.
• Draft shop working drawings for all productions, engineering all scenery to meet Center load in and storage requirements as well as designing technical solutions to the movement, function, structure, and general safety of scenic elements.
• Develop and execute soft good hang plots and rigging of scenery.
• Manage budget for the Scene Shop; develop and maintain the schedule for the Scene Shop.
• Choose all methods and material for construction.
• Hire and supervise all needed overhire Scene Shop personnel.
• Responsible for construction of scenery, as well as lifting, loading and unloading of scenery, insuring the timely and safe manufacture and installation of all scenic elements.
• Understand all remount scenery and its technical and moving elements via drawings and review of archival video in order to load in and assemble all previously mounted productions.
• Supervise load-in and tech week as well as the timely removal/storage of scenery at each show’s close.
• Responsible for maintenance of all technical and aesthetic aspects of shows in rehearsal and on stage.
• Coordinate scenic needs and facilitate load in of traveling companies as needed.
• Oversee general safety and compliance with all safety regulations in relation to Production Department.
• Maintain Scene Shop, tools and equipment, shop office, two theater spaces, rehearsal hall and soft goods inventory.
• Maintain warehouse and accommodate all storage needs of Center productions.
• Engineer, budget, build and install museum displays in collaboration with museum department.
• Design, budget, draw, build, etc. potential projects for all departments at the Center requiring on-site construction, and maintain records of expenses on each project.
• Provide technical support as needed for all non-production related needs including in-house functions, parties, special events, etc.
• Consult with facilities, education, and marketing departments on materials and methods for their projects.
• Schedule requires some evening and weekend work.
• Other duties assigned by the Producer, including but not limited to: collaborate with Facilities Manager regarding facilities safety; consult with outside contractors and project managers as needed; participate in execution of off-site Center activities such as fundraisers and marketing events.

Required Skills Include:
•proficiency in Vectorworks and Microsoft Office Suite•understanding of construction techniques •carpentry
•welding steel and aluminum •scenic painting •carving •advanced rigging skills •scheduling

Design opportunities may become available but are not the focus of this position.

Qualifications: MFA in Technical Theatre or similar. Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience also acceptable.
